There are many different routes to the same destination. The method of transportation and navigation along that path can vary significantly. The rate of speed and other control parameters can wildly fluctuate, along with environmental conditions such as topography, wind, temperature, and visibility. This all sounds like a challenge in technology, engineering, negotiation, and design, to ultimately discover a viable, practical solution that will hopefully benefit others experiencing similar future expeditions.

As a member of the College of Applied Engineering, Science & Technology (EAST) team, you are already well on your way to actively shaping the direction of tomorrow’s journey. Our staff and faculty are the best in the business. Always feel free to visit with any of us, stop us in the hall, or start up a conversation before or after class. Ask us what motivates us in our professions to advise, mentor, teach, counsel, and cultivate. Inquire about why we have an interest in this topic or discipline, what brought us to this place, our vision for the future, and why we care so much that you realize success in your personal and academic goals. Most importantly, ask about the challenges and impediments that each of us confronted along the way.

Sometimes you may think that the EAST person your consulting with across the table, or the one in front of the classroom, simply sprung to life fully-formed and flawless with no tribulations or scars in their past. This is a misperception that is exceedingly unhelpful to you and your progress along your academic path. If you’re experiencing some kind of hurdle frustrating your efforts to achieve a particular goal, rest assured there’s an EAST staff or faculty who confronted the same situation.


As an active learner in one of our EAST programs, get ready to solve some awesome puzzles and to think both within the boundaries of best practices, and beyond to the far reaches of invention and entrepreneurship. There are many great skillsets we value and teach in our college, but one of the top-shelf, highly-prized aptitudes we seek for all of our students is to be creative. The creative mind is powered by imagination – so be imaginative, be unconventional, be
experimental, be singular and groundbreaking in how you perceive problems and how you generate solutions to those problems.


Engineers and applied technologists are keenly aware of the world around them – what works well and what does not…how processes and systems can be modified and improved…what can be streamlined or made more efficient…at what point do form and function truly fuse together so the outcome is both sensible and aesthetically pleasing.
