I embarked on a unique journey that led me to where I am today, and I owe much of my success to Weber State University’s outstanding microbiology program, its incredible professors, and a series of serendipitous encounters.
Brothers' Unexpected Research Reward

We never expected a course-based research project to lead to two publications, including one that earned the Best Paper Award in the Utah Academy of Sciences Journals, Arts and Letters. Growing up, brotherly competition often arose between me and my older brother, Landon. Whether that was in sports, games, or our knowledge, we would always compete to see who was better or more knowledgeable. Although there was strong competition, in the end it was always friendly.

When I was in my mid-twenties, I read James Gleick’s Isaac Newton, a 2004 Pulitzer Prize finalist about… well, Isaac Newton. I can’t recall why I chose that biography because I had no mathematical or scientific background whatsoever (I suppose I was in a biography phase); however, I can recall the profound impact that it had on me. ...
