Scholarships and Funding

Adrian Leigh Maxson was passionate about people, social injustice, humanitarian movements, art, and learning. A senior at the DaVinci Academy of Science and the Arts in Ogden and an early college freshman at Weber State University, Adrian was killed in an auto-pedestrian accident after attending a benefit concert for Amnesty International at University Village. In honor of his life and his activism, the Adrian Maxson Scholarship has been established at Weber State University for students who are engaged politically, socially and creatively in the community.

Criteria

The scholarship recipient must demonstrate their commitment to humanity through active community involvement - either locally, nationally, or globally. Students who graduated through the DaVinci Academy of Science and the Arts in Ogden will be given preferential consideration. Must submit a resume with educational background and community/volunteer involvement and a brief essay describing your qualifications for the award.

Tuition and fees (class and department fees are not included).

Cody Ray Odekirk was committed to the spirit of community engagement. From a young age, Cody was an active volunteer at a myriad of nonprofit organizations in the community such as Red Cross, Boys and Girls Club and Youth Impact. Cody was a sophomore student at Weber State University when he was killed in an airplane accident on his way to build a school in Guatemala with Choice Humanitarian. In honor of his life and humanitarian heart, the Cody Ray Odekirk Scholarship has been established at Weber State University for students who are engaged in the spirit of engagement locally and internationally.

Criteria

The scholarship recipient must be a full-time student, with demonstrated financial need (FAFSA "Unmet Need"), and a minimum 3.0 GPA. The recipient must also be able to demonstrate a passion to participate in humanitarian projects, whether based in the United States or foreign countries.

Ronald M. Axton said, “When Nora and I first got married, we struggled so hard. It took 11 years to go through school, including a two-year stint in the Navy. We did everything we could to make ends meet.” Mr. Axton graduated from then-Weber State College with a degree in political science, the only member of his family ever to earn a college degree. He does not regret the hard work it took to receive his education but knows how much a scholarship could have helped him. Mr. Axton summed up his philosophy of giving with a quote from Yogi Berra, “‘When you come to a fork in the road, take it.’ Fortunately for us, we’re very happy with the forks we took. Life has been good to us, and maybe we can help someone else.”

Criteria

The scholarship recipient must be an undergraduate student at any class level and have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. May be a resident or non-resident student, may be enrolled full or part-time, and may be a student of any discipline or academic program. Preference given to students who can demonstrate financial need (FAFSA "Unmet need").

Uses

Tuition, fees or books. May be awarded either in full or as partial scholarships to one or more students. Award amounts not to be less than 25% of the amount of annual tuition (two semesters).

The Barbara L. and Norman C. Tanner Student Support Fund was set up as an unrestricted gift account to help nontraditional and underrepresented students remove financial barriers in order for them to take advantage of community engagement opportunities in their communities. Opportunities students can seek funding for are limitless, but must be something they otherwise would not engage in due to financial barriers (it must not be something they are already doing).

Note: Interested students must complete their 91·çÁ÷ Scholarship Universe Application before applying for the Tanner Funds. Also, awarding is ongoing and determined by the funding committee until funds run out for that academic year.
