Learning Assistants

What are Learning Assistants?

A Learning Assistant (LA) is a tutor who is embedded in your course, a peer who understands what you're going through and helps you manage the academic and non-academic challenges of college while working closely with your professors to ensure you understand the content covered in class.

LAs are part of first-year programs, Wildcat Scholars and First-Year Learning Communities, and other select courses.

Faculty Application for the LA Program

Interested in having a Learning Assistant (LA) in your class?

The LA program aims to ameliorate academic challenges to better support student success and retention. An LA is a knowledgeable student who has succeeded in the course and can now work closely with the instructor to ensure that students understand the content covered in class while also helping their peers navigate the academic and non-academic challenges of college.

The Responsibilities of an LA include...

Attending each class and acting as a role model, tutor, and friend to the students.

Actively participating in the classroom, and aiding the faculty member in leading collaborative activities.

Modeling deep learning strategies by encouraging students to critically engage with the material.

Offering peer support in navigating the hidden codes of academia.
