3.0 POLICY

3.1 Emeritus status. Emeritus status is an honorary title conveyed upon select faculty members upon their separation from the University. This status recognizes the importance of maintaining valuable connections with distinguished faculty who carry significant institutional knowledge and who will support the ongoing development of the University and its students.

3.2  Factors for consideration. Selection of faculty members for emeritus status should be made considering factors that will serve the University’s purposes and can include, but are not limited to, the following:

3.2.1 The faculty member is permanently separating from University employment;

3.2.2 The faculty member holds tenure;

3.2.3 The faculty member has made significant or meritorious contributions to the University in areas such as student success, teaching, scholarship, leadership, innovation, or service;

3.2.4 The faculty member has demonstrated a strong commitment to professional ethics;

3.2.5 The faculty member has provided long-term, meaningful service to the University;

3.2.6 The faculty member states their intent to stay engaged with the University, support its students on an ongoing basis, and maintain relationships for continuity and access to institutional knowledge.

3.3 Granting emeritus status. Emeritus status is not automatically granted upon retirement or separation from the University. Faculty may request this status to their dean with the decision made as described below.

3.3.1 The dean of the faculty member’s college must provide written documentation to the Provost supporting how the faculty member qualifies in accordance with this policy.

3.3.2 The Provost will review the request and make a recommendation to the President, who will make the final determination.

3.4 Benefits. Faculty members awarded emeritus status retain their professional rank with "emeritus" added before their last held title. They are also eligible for benefits outlined in PPM 3-45.
