WHY WEBER STATE
Choosing Weber State was an easy decision! I was a transfer student from a university in Boston. When I moved to Utah and began looking for a program here, Weber State University immediately caught my attention. During my first conversation with the academic advisor, I was excited to learn that the program offered diverse teaching styles with some classes offered online asynchronous, virtually synchronous and in-person. This flexibility was exactly what I needed with my current work schedule. Additionally, I was drawn to the program because of the curriculum. I am a PharmD working for a biotechnology company, so my prior education included minimal business exposure. I wanted to pursue a program that introduced me to a variety of business aspects (marketing, accounting, ethics, etc.) and I found that Weber's curriculum included a solid balance of these areas.
WHY THE MBA
I chose to pursue a Master of Business Administration to enhance my business acumen. Working on a cross-functional team within the biotechnology industry, I collaborate with my marketing and sales colleagues frequently. Prior to starting the MBA program, I did not understand the "why" behind many business decisions that were made and I struggled with communicating business needs to my colleagues.
The MBA has given me the language and tools to better understand portfolio prioritization, market access, and go鈥憈o鈥憁arket planning. I’m now able to translate scientific insights into clear business recommendations, align medical objectives with brand strategy, and communicate trade鈥憃ffs confidently with my marketing and sales. As a result, I contribute more effectively in cross鈥慺unctional settings, bridging clinical evidence with commercial needs and elevating patient鈥慶entric decisions with sound business rationale.
COMMUNITY
When I think about my time at Weber State, what stands out most is the strong sense of support and community I felt throughout my program. My professors were not only knowledgeable but also genuinely invested in my success, always willing to offer guidance whenever I needed it. The coursework challenged me to think critically and apply what I learned in practical, meaningful ways. Overall, my experience at Weber State helped me grow both personally and professionally, leaving me with confidence and lasting connections.
PROFESSOR IMPACT
During the MBA program, I had the opportunity to take some great classes from truly fantastic professors. While there were course topics I enjoyed more than others, some really made a lasting impact.
I particularly loved Marketing with Brett Horstman and Global Macroeconomics with Dr. Keinsley. Their teaching styles and the way they turned challenging topics into engaging discussions made these courses unforgettable.
I also really enjoyed Selling Techniques with Dr. Nielson and Financial Management with Dr. Turner, as both courses offered practical insights that I can carry forward in my career.
Overall, my experience at Weber State helped me grow academically, professionally, and personally, leaving me with confidence to continue growing in my career.
WHAT'S NEXT
After completing my MBA, I plan to leverage my enhanced understanding of cross-functional business dynamics to strengthen collaboration within the pharmaceutical industry. I aim to apply the strategic knowledge gained through the program to drive impactful decisions that align with long-term organizational goals. Ultimately, my objective is to position myself for leadership roles where I can integrate scientific expertise with business strategy to deliver innovative solutions for patients.
ADVICE FOR FUTURE STUDENTS
Trust yourself and recognize that your unique experiences and perspective are valuable throughout the MBA journey. It isn't easy to step outside of your comfort zone, but you've already done that by starting the MBA program. Stay proactive by seeking opportunities, managing your time intentionally, and engaging fully in projects and discussions.
Also, don’t hesitate to speak openly with your professors about anticipated challenges because they’re there to support you and will appreciate your initiative. Professors are aware that majority of the students in the program also work full time and are willing to work with students if needed.
Above all, remain eager to learn and cultivate curiosity, as these qualities will elevate both your growth and your overall MBA experience.
