• Can I earn a Weber Computer Science bachelor's degree by taking classes with Salt Lake Community College?

  Yes. Weber has an agreement with SLCC for this purpose. Students who take CSIS courses from SLCC can be prepared for Weber upper division CS courses. The Weber CS program offers these courses daytime, evening, and in two online modes to help students complete their bachelor's degree

• How long does it take to graduate with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Weber State?

  Generally SLCC students transition to Weber with an AS degree and CSIS courses completed. Full time students then usually need 18-24 more months to complete their BS degree. But the full answer depends on how many requirements the student has remaining, the number of classes attempted and passed each semester, the frequency with which certain classes are taught each year and the determination of the student. Advisors can identify all remaining courses and provide a rough timeline toward bachelor's degree completion. 

• When are Weber CS classes held?

  Weber's CS face-to-face upper division (3000-4000 level) classes are scheduled from 5:30-7:20pm and from 7:30-9:20pm, on Mondays/Wednesdays and Tuesdays/Thursdays, typically on the Davis Campus. Nearly all CS classes are 4 credit hours each. Between 3-6 classes are offered each semester, year-round. Two online modes exist, one is the traditional format which fits to semester deadlines, and another is CS Flex which allows students to start at any point during the year and complete courses at a faster pace if desired. • Can I earn a bachelor's degree in Computer Science without going north of Salt Lake County?

  Yes. All CS courses are found online. Lower division support courses like MATH can be taken either through Weber State online or SLCC face-to-face.

• What grades must I earn to satisfy Weber CS graduation requirements?

  For CS courses, a minimum grade of C is required for all CS courses. A C- is acceptable for Math, Physics and English courses, but students should be aware that a C- may not satisfy specific class prerequisite requirements.

• What GPA is required to graduate from Weber?

  An overall GPA of 2.0 is required by Weber. A GPA of 2.7 over all CS and support classes is required by the CS Department. Transfer GPAs are not factored into the overall GPA requirement.

• Which CS requirements may be waived for incoming SLCC transfer students?

  Certain general education support courses can be waived from the Weber CS degree if that student has completed a prior Associate of Science (or Arts) degree. Contact an academic advisor to request the following requirements waived: A) The science support course with lab requirement, B) CS 1030 (satisfied by CSIS 1030), C) COMM 2110, and D) ETC 2001. Some MATH courses may also need to be manually waived. For example, if a student completed Calculus I but College Algebra was not officially completed, then College Algebra can be waived. 

• What are the math requirements for the Weber CS bachelor's degree?

  A specified statistics course, MATH 1210 Calculus I, and a specified MATH course beyond Calculus I. For the specified courses, see the catalog or speak with an advisor. You are strongly encouraged to take a math class every semester until all math requirements are satisfied.

• Are other lower-division courses required even after graduating with an SLCC CSIS associate's degree? 

  Probably. Most students with a SLCC CSIS associate's degree require an additional Weber lower division Weber CS course. An advisor will help identify these courses.

• Which English classes should I take at SLCC to satisfy the General Education requirement?

  Weber CS recommends that you take ENGL 1010 and ENGL 2010.

• The Weber degree desires ENGL 2010, but I took ENGL 2100, will this cause problems?

  No. Further, students may request that SLCC ENGL 2100 be applied to the Weber technical writing support course. Be aware that if this is done, the student may fall short of the upper division requirement of the bachelor's degree, and so another upper division course will be needed.

• Must I graduate from SLCC with an AS before I start taking classes from Weber?

  No. You may register for Weber upper division classes as soon as you complete their individual prerequisites. Students may take classes from both SLCC and Weber simultaneously as their schedules and finances permit. Transfer students should enroll at Weber and send an official transcript from SLCC to Weber as soon as possible prior to registering for Weber classes. The transcript articulation process can take up to six weeks, so please plan ahead. Also, be aware that taking courses at Weber and SLCC the same semester results in an overall higher tuition bill due to each school having a base tuition charge. 

• What is the CS 2899 Assessment and do I have to pass it?

  The Weber CS 2899 Assessment is a multiple-choice exam that tests your understanding of the lower division CS requirements. Passing the CS 2899 Assessment is required for all CS students. You register for the exam through Weber as you would any other Weber class. It is a zero credit hour requirement, which means there is no direct cost to the student. The passing percentage is 60% and a student may take the test up to three times. Historically, this CS 2899 has not acted as a gatekeeper or limited students from a degree. • Can I request a prerequisite override for CS 3750 if I have not yet passed the CS 2899 Assessment?

  CS Program policy forbids the granting of a prerequisite override for CS 3750 when the student has not completed the CS 2899 Assessment.

• Can I receive Weber CS credit for having a job in the computer science industry, such as an internship?

  Yes. The Weber CS degree has a 2 credit hour internship requirement. You can get 2 additional credit hours for a total of 4 if you choose. Note that the degree internship requirement does not require having an internship, but rather that you either make a good effort to obtain an internship or complete different work if an internship could not be obtained. • Do I have to pay for parking as an SLCC alumni?

  Yes. However, SLCC Alumni may request a 50% discount from SLCC Parking Services for an annual parking pass.

• Do I need to speak to a Weber advisor prior to registering for my first class as an SLCC Transfer Student?

  Meeting with a Weber academic advisor is strongly recommended the moment you begin to consider becoming a Weber CS student, when you have questions about registration or specific requirements, and as you get close to graduation.

• Are Weber CS class prerequisites mandatory or just recommended?

  Weber CS course prerequisites are mandatory and enforced by the registration system. If you have a similar course that you believe counts as a prereq but isn't officially listed as a prereq, see an advisor. The advisor may be able to manually enter an exception.

• I have a number of older credits on my transcript. Can those older credits still satisfy current graduation requirements?

  Evaluation of transcripts is performed at the University level, but you may request that the CS program also review your transcript for the application of "expired" credits. In limited circumstances the program may make an exception for you. There are no promises. Meet with an academic advisor as soon as possible to review your individual situation.

• Can I continue onward into a master's degree after a bachelor's degree?

• Does Weber State partner with SLCC with other technology related degrees?

  Yes, Weber State works with SLCC with a Cybersecurity and Network Management bachelor's degree.

• I am getting an error when I attempt to register for a Weber CS class.  What do I do?

  For the most part, registration error messages are self-explanatory.  There are two errors that require further explanation for CS students.  Note that at Weber, course prerequisites are mandatory, whereas at SLCC many prerequisites are simply recommended.
  
  Prerequisite and Test Score error: the course has prerequisites that do not appear to be satisfied by courses found in your Weber transcript. Examine the list of prerequisites carefully to determine which prerequisite you have not satisfied.  
  
  • If the prerequisite is CS 2899 and you have successfully passed the CS 2899 exam, request that the CS 2899 instructor notify the instructor of the class you wish to take that you have successfully completed the exam.  If all other prerequisites are then satisfied, the instructor is authorized to enter a prereq Override on your behalf. Include your W# in any emails to Weber faculty and staff.
  • If the prerequisites are SLCC transfer credits that have not yet arrived at Weber, email the instructor from your Weber email account with your W number and an unofficial PDF copy of your SLCC transcript and request a prereq Override. Instructors are not required to admit students into their course who have not completed all of the prerequisites.
